Extra, extra: DC Comics and Harley Quinn (opinion)

I became aware of DC Comic’s Harley Quinn competition yesterday, and, like a lot of people, was pretty pissed off by it.  “Suicide is so sexy.” Which is good, because these day’s Harley is busting out of her bustier. I’m not a massive comics fan, but Harley Quinn I do like  -so much so that I dressed as her for a Halloween race, back when she wore a harlequin suit.

This is NOT the harlequin outfit. Apparently Harley doesn't even need clothes any more.

This is NOT the harlequin outfit. Apparently Harley doesn’t really even need clothes any more.

But once I’d calmed down a bit and thought about it, I realised this is a stroke of genius on DC’s part.

This is a company that just ‘lost’ two of their writers because they (DC) decided to ditch long-established story lines and refuse to allow gay marriage in their comics, and a company that is happily sexing up their female characters to ridiculous proportions (and I’m saying this about comics, in which women are already fantasy-driven). So people can get as outraged as they like, but it doesn’t matter.
DC won’t listen – they don’t need to listen. Because the artists that enter this competition and draw those panels without protest or pause are also artists that will follow its agenda and instructions without question, and that’s clearly what DC want.
