Last night my friends and I walked out of a particularly brilliant double-bill and director Q&A to news of the Boston Marathon bombings. The crowd of people coming out of the cinema was abuzz with the news. We spent the train ride home scanning news sites and twitter for information, texting people who had contacted us during the films. It was a quiet ride home and we were somewhat shell-shocked. The news came on top of the death of a 23-year-old man at this year’s Brighton marathon. It has been a dark week for the running community. Heartbeat
This morning I sent in the withdrawal form for 70.3UK. I am heartbroken and my heart appears to be broken.
I’ve said a few times in recent entries that training hasn’t been going well, and I mentioned why in the last one – chest pains, palpitations, trembling. I brushed over it a bit, but I had been worrying for a while. I also admitted that I’d been putting off seeing a doctor because I didn’t want them to say I couldn’t race, or couldn’t train, or couldn’t go to Paris (and honestly, there will be a far cheerier entry about the trip as a whole, especially since I legitimately will be sitting around a lot more). One brain-melt with a side order of crushed optimism
Sometimes there’s so much to do, or one thing to get done is so massive and overwhelming, that I freeze up and don’t get anything done at all. This never happens at work, but it does happen at home, and it happened with this blog last week. I had a dozen ideas of things to write about, freaked out about not being able to do all of them and ended up not writing a thing. Really, the way to handle it would have been to do a few different entries over the course of the week. But God forbid I should break my arbitrary one-entry-a-week rule by writing too much instead of too little. Continue reading “One brain-melt with a side order of crushed optimism”
Three S’s
So this is a day late yet again – but in my defence, Rest Day Monday demands either the pub or the cinema, and this week I managed to do both (Winter’s Bone and Fargo – very suitable given the weather). Which meant not managing to do my weekly writing and yes, I did consider just leaving it for another week. But following impatient cries from my rabid fans… Continue reading “Three S’s”
No additives or preservatives.
NOTE: potentially too much information for anyone who knows me in real life. Not for the squeamish.
I am lying on the sofa with what feels like the worst kind of period pain (disclaimer: it’s a couple of days later, now, as I finish this). It’s not my period, though. It’s the aftermath of having a copper coil fitted.

Run for your life
It’s not a secret, exactly, but it’s not common knowledge among the people I see day-to-day that I have depression.
I don’t mind people knowing about it and I don’t mind answering questions. I don’t think it’s something that ought to define me, but there’s a stigma attached to it and it’s definitely not a glamorous quirk, so I tend not to drop that side of my life into general conversation when someone asks me about myself.
#9 06:05:04
That title is my time for the London Marathon (#9 Run a marathon). Next time I’m aiming for 05:04:03. I’ll put up marathon photos as soon as I get them, if I do. Also I just realised that, in what must have been a moment of weakness, when I transcribed my list, I changed marathon to 10km. PAH! Me of little faith. Still says marathon in the original, though!
